Witness statement name:
Max, male, age 44 - homeowner

Witness statement:
Based on where my gas meter is and the green electrical box I thought I was meters from the underground gas and electricity lines. The fence post holes I was digging were along the very edge of our property where the lines aren't running. After I felt the auger hit something solid, I gave it a few more twists figuring it was a large stone. It wouldn't be the first one I encountered while digging. I pulled the auger out but there was no stone. It wasn't until a few minutes later while I had moved unto starting the next hole when I started to smell gas. I called to Christina to come over and take a sniff. She confirmed the scent so I had her call utility services while I cleaned up the tools from around the holes. It never occurred to me that the electrical line could've been hit too. I feel lucky that I missed hitting both lines. That could've have killed us both.
